2004 STC Ball UK

Old Thomians and their invariably glamorous wives and partners gathered at the Copthorne Hotel in Slough, Windsor to celebrate being, well, a Thomian, which is quite a big thing. Deepal Ahangama returned as President this year as well and along with his lovely wife Shanthini pulled off yet another fantastic event. One of the things that stood out was the decor that adorned the ballroom at the Copthorne, attention to detail that is fitting for the Thomians who were entertained by none other than Mike Cooke and The Islanders once again.

The OTAUK President Deepal Ahangama portrayed the image of a thorough bred Thomian in his slate grey dinner suite sporting a blue/black bow tie and cumbererband and was accompanied by his glamorous wife Shanthini adorned in a rusty black raw silk saree with silver and rust diamante edging.

The highlight of the evening was the arrival of the incumbent Warden of STC who gave a fascinating speech in the third person….impersonating the warden as a messenger. Some of the key pointers were the improvements made to the College on the academic as well as the sporting arena. Dr David Ponniah also thanked the association for their unstinted support extended to the college and the satellite schools year on year.

Deepal Ahangama stressed on the importance of having these “do”s for the purpose of networking as well as raising the much needed funds for the alma mater and thanked all the guests for gracing this occasion.

Mike Cooke and the Islanders made fantastic noises this year too and is far the best Sri Lankan entertainer who kept the guests on their toes until the wee hours of the morning. Mahen Perera did an excellent job as the compare and kept his audience well informed of the sequence of events.

The raffle was a resounding success with the winners walking away with three sets of airline tickets with the courtesy of Qatar Airways, Dukes Court Travel and Glen Carriers. Lanka Pride gave away a hamper as a consolation prize and there were many bottles of spirits to the well spirited!

The dinner was scrumptious and the wine flowed freely and a wonderful time was had by all……

NB: Should there be any old Thomian who wishes to join the OTAUK…please do call Deepal Ahangama on 01293 424642…
